Personally, I would say RRLY is a turning point of Eugene’s acting career. How so? If you had followed Eugene’s drama since her debut, it’s not hard to see the similarities of the characters she played thus far. Consequently, Eugene runs the risk of being stereotyped into playing such characters and Yong Bong Soon in RRLY is a totally surprising and yet refreshing change.
Prior to the airing of the drama, many viewers expressed concern about whether Eugene will be up to the task of playing a simple countryside girl who does not know the norms of the society. In the viewer’s mind, Eugene, the former SES k-pop singer, who is glamorous and pretty, will not know how a country girl will behave. Eugene proved them wrong with her splendid imitation of the Kang Won Do accent and mature acting skills. In fact her rendition of the popular recessional hymn, Arirang, is also gaining a lot of popularity among viewers.
Although I find Eugene acted well in her old dramas like Last Dance and Wonderful Life, it is in RRLY that she makes your eyes light up and proved to people her ability and versatility as an actress, not just a pretty face. Frankly speaking, I did not really like RRLY initially and it’s a rather slow paced drama easy to give up for those who are impatient. But I watch on, believing in Eugene and I was not disappointed. Eugene made the character Bong Soon alive and this is a drama that will grow on you. Bong Soon is a very simple and naïve girl with a mind pure like a child and Eugene really portrayed Bong Soon’s childlike behave so well that you will unconsciously see yourself smiling as you see Bong Soon’s cute little actions and facial expression. I never knew Eugene can be so expressive and cute until I watch this drama.
To conclude, I would say RRLY is not your ordinary comedy and it does require some patience to appreciate this drama as being 36 episodes, the development of each character is rather slow and the front few episodes are a bit boring. However if you bear with it for a while, you will discover the gems in it. A drama not to be missed!
